Simple, Tried and tested tips for goal setting

A successful mind set makes a successful person, and to achieve success one has to plan and prepare for it. Setting goals is a winning way to plan for success by detailing what it is that you would like to achieve, when you want to achieve it and how you will achieve it. Having your goals clearly set out helps you to create a successful mind set. In this article, I will share some of my simple but tried and tested tips to goal setting.

It is impossible to set goals without knowing what it is that you want in life or at any given period hence, the foundation of your goals are your desires, wishes and aspirations as setting goals is creating a plan for success that enables you to achieve all these things.  What is paramount is to ensure that you make the plan to achieving these goals challenging but realistic as one of the major pitfalls for setting goals is in setting unrealistic goals. The whole point of setting goals is to commit yourself to what you want and to keep you motivated and  focused in its pursuit but if you set unrealistic goals, you doom yourself to failure and defeat the whole purpose.

So when you think of setting goals remember that you are writing down the answers to these key questions:

What is it that I want in life/ this year/ in the next 5 years?

Is it realistic/ attainable?

What can I do every day/week/ month to help me to reach this goal?

There are basically two types of goals, short and long term goals. Short term goals are the goals which you can achieve over a short period of time whilst long term goals span over a longer time scale. It is significantly easier to set short term goals as you can anticipate the near future and there is a shorter time scale to see your desired outcome and achieve your goals. It is also much easier to maintain consistency, motivation and drive over a short period of time increasing the likelihood of you achieving your goals.

It is however much harder to set long term goals as they require one to stay consistent in the actions that will lead you to achieving your goals over a long period of time. Obstacles and challenges tend to spring up in life over time, making it sometimes challenging to keep pursuing your goals. However the secret to setting long term goals is setting goals that are not rigid but instead goals which you can adjust to any changes in your life. This is not a gateway to create excuses but instead an avenue to ensure that regardless of change, you can still achieve your goals and see the desired outcome.

I hope this article helps you as you set your goals in this new year. Feel free to get in touch with any questions through the comments section below and also check out my previous post on how to overcome failure.
